Israel 2017. 74 '. Documentary. VOSTF.
Director: Rubi Gat

This documentary chronicles the life of Fredy Hirsch, Jew, gay, magnificent athlete born in Germany, who was nineteen when the Nuremberg Laws were passed. Deported to Auschwitz, he was appointed head of a nursery for 600 children and fought to his last breath to maintain their human dignity. His death on the eve of a revolt he led has remained a mystery until this film.

Built from archival footage, interviews with survivors and animated scenes, this heartbreaking documentary follows Fredy in his life as an athlete, a sports teacher admired by his students and a never-desperate deportee working for children - from the Therezin ghetto to the Auchwitz extermination camp. Dear Fredy is the portrait of a courageous and charismatic man who infuses everyone with his strength and vitality. A remarkable contribution to the history of homosexuals on a subject rarely discussed in cinema.
