Marc Martin

In the closet of the beautiful History, the cups are stain. The cup, in the slang of the last century, was vespasian. Erected in the public space at the time of hygiene, vespasiennes had to meet the natural needs of the male population. In private, the cups responded to a social need. Men seeking identity have laid the foundation stones for living together.

Inaugurated last year at the Schwules Museum in Berlin, Marc Martin's exhibition has been extended due to its success. Because it fits on the fringes of the agreed memory, today, in Paris, no classical institution wished to highlight the subject. "The pissotières have a bad reputation. They are more synonymous with shame than pride within the community. Yet these buildings, which are confused with the adventures of many gays, crossdressers, prostitutes, libertarians, offered a freedom escaping any economic stake. These places of passage and atypical sociability saw social classes fade, cultures to mix ... It has often been criticized men who frequent the pissotières to be cowardly, described as sordid their meetings in these public places. But have not they dared, in an environment hostile to diversity, to brave the forbidden? Have they not, for more than a century, dared to face pleasures forbidden by law? I would like us to recognize these men a certain courage. I would like to return to these places, which have sheltered so many shivers, their disturbing share of sensuality ".

At the politically correct, the plastic work of Marc Martin favors the humanly exact. That's why Le Point Ephémère, a living art center dedicated to emerging ideas, is proud to present "Cups, public toilets - private affairs".
