MEILI, from Zhou Zhou
China. 2018. 88 '. Fiction. VOSTF.
IN COMPETITION FICTIONS
Meili builds her life between her job in a laundry and her partner Li Wen, a company employee. Having a big sister whom she hates and her violent brother-in-law, she suffocates and dreams of going to Shanghai with Li Wen. The refusal of her to accompany him, lest his colleagues discover their relationship, triggers a series of events that will shake the fragile balance of his life.
With this subtle portrait of a homosexual young woman in China, director Zhou Zhou has produced a first film of rare audacity and a resolutely intimate approach: the camera almost never lets go of the delicately expressive face of newcomer Chi Yun , also co-writer of the film. Thanks to this closeness, Zhou Zhou conveys to us the stubborn hope of Meili and his moving rage to take charge of his destiny despite living conditions that are far from favorable for him. A poignant work, intense, captivating!
