SOCRATES, by Alexandre Moratto
Brazil. 71 '. 2018. Fiction. VOSTF.
After the death of his mother, Socrates, a teenager from the favelas of São Paulo, finds himself forced to stand on his own, between the violence of his father and the depth of his grief. When he meets Maicon, an older boy, on a construction site, the violence of their first contact quickly turns into attraction. But street homophobia is catching up soon ...
Co-written and performed by underprivileged young people from the favelas, this crazy-energy fight film centers on Socrates, a gay, black, Brazilian teenager who faces a great deal of social, physical, and emotional violence. By marrying with rare empathy its eventful trajectory, this "punch" work offers an uncompromising view of Brazilian society: its brutality, its poverty, its injustices and contradictions. An unvarnished authenticity that deserves to be greeted in a particularly LGBTphobe context since the advent of President Bolsonaro.
