VICTIM, Basil Dearden.
UK. 1961. 90 '. Fiction. VOSTF.
In partnership with The 7th Gender.
A prominent London lawyer, Melvin Farr, goes in search of a master singer who threatens to denounce homosexuals (homosexual acts are still illegal). Married and a father, he was photographed with his former lover, "Boy" Barrett. The young man, victim of blackmail, is found committed suicide ... Farr, who refused to help him out of fear for his career, finally decides to participate in the investigation, even to endanger his private and professional life .
Made in 1961 when Britain still has not taken the step to lift the illegality of homosexual relations, Victim is a company denouncing a totally unfair law. But more than just a thesis film that preaches only the convicts, Victim is above all a well-conducted crime thriller, offering a gallery of characters as complex as they are varied. With in the title role a Dirk Bogarde who would then begin the second (and most exciting) part of his career.
The session will be followed by a debate with Anne Delabre, journalist, author and programmer of the film club Le 7e Genre.
