SUPERM is an international multimedia art team founded by the Russian-American artist and writer Slava Mogutin and the American artist and musician Brian Kenny. Having joined their forces in 2004, Siberian-born Mogutin was exiled from Russia at the age of 21 for his queer writings and activism and became the first Russian to be granted political asylum in the US on the grounds of homophobic persecution. Kenny was born on the American military base in Heidelberg, Germany, trained as a competitive gymnast, and studied opera at Oberlin Conservatory. Together they’re responsible for site-specific gallery and museum shows in the US, Canada, Russia, Israel, and across Europe. Curated by Ruben Esparza, Founder and creator of QUEER BIENNIAL. This is the first Queer Biennial anchored in Los Angeles, New York, Mexico and Paris. www.queerbiennial.com
TOFF PURPOSE STATEMENT:
In 1984, the nonprofit Tom of Finland Foundation was established by Durk Dehner and his friend Touko Laaksonen a.k.a. Tom of Finland. As Tom had established worldwide recognition as the master of homo-erotic art, the Foundation’s original purpose was to preserve his vast catalog of work. Several years later the scope was widened to offer a safe haven for all erotic art in response to rampant discrimination against art that portrayed sexual behavior or generated a sexual response. Today TOM's Foundation continues in its efforts of educating the public as to the cultural merits of erotic art and in promoting healthier, more tolerant attitudes about sexuality.
